Mr Tan Eng Kee

Founder & Mentor | Zhilong Constructions and Engineering Pte. Ltd.

Mr Tan Eng Kee is the Founder and Mentor of Zhilong Constructions and Engineering Pte. Ltd. (ZLCE). With decades of hands-on experience in the plumbing and sanitary industry, he has been instrumental in shaping the company’s foundation, values, and direction.

During his younger days, Mr Tan was involved in the fruit business, assisting a close relative in managing a fruit-reselling business. In the 1980s, he was introduced to the M&E maintenance industry, an opportunity that sparked his interest in plumbing and sanitary works.

Determined to build his knowledge and expertise, Mr Tan spent many years gaining practical, hands-on experience in the industry. His work included the replacement of water pipes, water tank washing and maintenance in residential estates, as well as various plumbing and sanitary works. For approximately 20 years, he worked as a freelance plumber, building his technical knowledge, practical skills, and understanding of the needs of customers and the industry.

With his extensive experience and confidence in his trade, Mr Tan eventually decided to establish his own plumbing and sanitary business as a sole proprietor, focusing on serving the needs of commercial and industrial clients.

In 2013, Zhilong Constructions and Engineering Pte. Ltd. was incorporated, marking an important milestone in the company's journey. Since then, Mr Tan has continued to play an active role in the business, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation. He worked closely alongside his sons, mentoring and guiding them throughout their careers and supporting them in becoming professional Licensed Plumbers.

His Core Values

Mr Tan strongly believes that a successful company should be built not only on business performance, but also on people, trust, safety, and quality.

Safety has always been his number one priority. To Mr Tan, safety means protecting both employees and clients and ensuring that everyone returns home safely and maintains a healthy life.

Trust is the second principle he strongly believes in. He regards open and effective communication as the foundation for building trust, honesty, and strong relationships with employees, customers, business partners, and other stakeholders.

Quality is his third core value. Mr Tan believes that every client should receive workmanship and services that the company can genuinely stand behind. He continuously encourages his team to take pride in their work and deliver quality finished products and services.

Beyond being the founder, Mr Tan considers ZLCE a home for its employees. He believes in treating his staff like family, providing guidance, mentorship, and support while encouraging everyone to grow together with the company.

Even today, Mr Tan remains actively involved in the business. He continues to report to work daily, provide mentorship to the team, participate in strategic discussions, and contribute his decades of industry knowledge to the company's decision-making.

His hands-on leadership, practical experience, and commitment to his people have laid a strong foundation for ZLCE. As the company enters its next phase of growth, Mr Tan continues to serve as a source of experience, wisdom, and guidance—ensuring that the values upon which ZLCE was built remain at the heart of its future.

Mr Lawrence Tan

Director | Zhilong Constructions and Engineering Pte. Ltd.

Mr Lawrence Tan is a Director of Zhilong Constructions and Engineering Pte. Ltd. and the younger son of the company’s founder and mentor, Mr Tan Eng Kee. A devoted father of a son and daughter, Lawrence combines his engineering background, technical expertise, hands-on industry experience, and strong family values in leading the company.

Lawrence graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 1996 with a Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering. He subsequently continued to upgrade his professional qualifications, becoming a Certified Licensed Plumber and obtaining a certification in M&E Maintenance from BCA Academy.

Growing up, Lawrence was deeply influenced by his father. Mr Tan Eng Kee would often share stories of the many encounters, challenges, and experiences he faced throughout his years in the plumbing and sanitary industry. These stories gave Lawrence an early appreciation of the realities of running a business and the importance of hard work, resilience, and responsibility.

During his polytechnic years, Lawrence was mindful that his father was working as a freelance plumber and was the sole breadwinner of the family. Wanting to ease his father's responsibilities and contribute to the family, Lawrence decided to commit himself to a contract with the Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) as an Air Force Technician.

For Lawrence, the commitment was more than simply fulfilling a career obligation. It was an opportunity to earn, learn, develop technical skills, and contribute to his family's needs. After graduating from polytechnic, he fulfilled his contractual commitment over approximately three years, gaining valuable discipline, technical knowledge, and practical experience along the way.

Upon completing his SAF commitment, Lawrence returned to the family business at a time when the business was growing and additional manpower was needed. His father invited him to join the business, and Lawrence accepted the opportunity to work alongside him.

Rather than managing the business purely from an office, Lawrence chose to immerse himself in the physical work. He believed that to manage the business effectively, he first needed to understand the work carried out by his team. By working alongside the plumbers and workers, he gained first-hand knowledge of the challenges faced on site and developed a deeper understanding of the complete plumbing and sanitary process.

During this period, Lawrence also pursued his professional qualification as a Licensed Plumber, further strengthening his technical knowledge and credibility within the industry.

In 2013, Lawrence took an important step in the company's development by establishing Zhilong Constructions and Engineering Pte. Ltd. Together with his father, he helped transform the original sole-proprietorship business into the established company it is today.

Throughout this journey, Lawrence has remained committed to the three core values instilled in him by his father: Safety, Trust, and Quality.

Safety comes first. Lawrence believes that every employee should be able to carry out his work safely and return home to his family each day.

Trust is built through honesty, communication, accountability, and keeping commitments to employees, clients, and business partners.

Quality means taking pride in workmanship and ensuring that every project and service delivered by ZLCE meets the standards expected by its clients.

As Director, Lawrence is actively involved in recruiting, training, and developing employees, ensuring that the company's core values are understood and practised throughout the organisation. He continually reminds his team that the company's success is built not only on technical capability, but also on the character, attitude, and responsibility of its people.

Together with his father, Lawrence has helped carry forward the family business from its humble beginnings as a freelance plumbing operation into Zhilong Constructions and Engineering Pte. Ltd., a growing company with a strong foundation in plumbing, sanitary, M&E maintenance, and engineering services.

Today, Lawrence continues to build upon the foundation laid by his father while preparing the company and its people for the next generation. His journey reflects the values of family, perseverance, hands-on leadership, continuous learning, and commitment to excellence—values that remain deeply embedded in the identity of ZLCE.

He graduated from Ngee Ann Polytechnic in 1996 with a Diploma in Mechatronics Engineering. He subsequently obtained a certification in M&E Maintenance from BCA Academy and served his National Service as an SAF Army Officer in the Infantry Unit, where he developed strong leadership, discipline, and team-management capabilities.

Upon completing his National Service, Michael began his career as a Plant Maintenance Engineer in the manufacturing industry. After gaining several years of engineering and maintenance experience, he moved to Everrich Enterprise as an Operations Manager, where he was responsible for logistics and operational matters relating to the trading of commodity products.

After a year in operations management, Michael was given the opportunity to enter the Oil and Gas industry, where he spent approximately five years with a local sole-proprietorship company, SCS. As a Site Service Engineer, he was responsible for the installation, commissioning, and servicing of load-monitoring systems originating from Norway, for which the company was the sole distributor in Southeast Asia.

His role required extensive international travel, taking him to various oil rigs, offshore platforms, FPSOs, and semi-submersible vessels around the world. Working in challenging offshore environments allowed him to develop a strong ability to work independently, make critical decisions under pressure, and resolve technical problems efficiently. His international exposure also strengthened his communication and interpersonal skills, enabling him to work effectively with people from different nationalities, cultures, and backgrounds.

Seeking to broaden his experience beyond offshore operations, Michael subsequently moved into the lifting and wire-rope industry, joining Bridon Rope as a Sales Engineer. In this role, he applied his engineering knowledge to the design and engineering of wire-rope slings for lifting applications, while also providing technical and commercial solutions for wire ropes used on cranes and other lifting equipment.

His strong technical knowledge, commercial capability, and consistent performance distinguished him among his peers. During his approximately ten years with Bridon, he was promoted three times, eventually advancing to the position of Sales Manager. In this capacity, he led a team and worked closely with the Finance Controller to consolidate and prepare sales reports for the company's headquarters in the United Kingdom.

In 2018, Michael was invited to join Zhilong Constructions and Engineering Pte. Ltd. Drawing upon his extensive experience in engineering, operations, technical services, sales, and management—together with the leadership and business skills developed throughout his career—he has played an important role in driving the company's growth and development.

Under his leadership, Michael continues to focus on strengthening operational efficiency, developing people, improving project execution, and delivering reliable engineering solutions to clients. His broad industry exposure and hands-on approach enable him to bridge the gap between technical requirements, site operations, commercial considerations, and management objectives.

With a career built on continuous learning, practical experience, leadership, and problem-solving, Mr Michael Mau remains committed to bringing Zhilong Constructions and Engineering Pte. Ltd. to greater heights, while building a strong and capable team for the company's continued growth.
